Thailand’s Apostille Transition — What Applies Before 28 February 2027
Thailand deposited its accession to the Apostille Convention on 30 June 2026. It is scheduled to take effect for Thailand on 28 February 2027. Until then, the current legalization process continues; after that date, confirm the implemented apostille process and destination-country acceptance before filing.
Why Clients Ask BTIS to Handle Legalization
Apostille Thailand Alternative — 5-Step Handling
From document review to MFA legalization, embassy authentication when needed, and final delivery.
Document pre-check
Send scans or photos. We confirm the likely steps, fees, and earliest filing window for the destination country.
Certified translation
Names, dates, titles, and stamps are translated in the format expected by MFA reviewers. Rush translation may be available.
MFA submission & legalization
We prepare POA documents where required, book the queue, complete forms, submit, and collect at the Department of Consular Affairs.
Embassy coordination (if required)
If the receiving country requires embassy authentication, we coordinate the Bangkok consular step, including appointment booking and document drop-off.
Delivery
Collect from our Bangkok or Chiang Mai office, or receive tracked courier delivery by DHL or EMS.
How Thai Document Legalization Works
For Thai documents going overseas, these are the steps commonly used instead of an apostille.
Document preparation
Start with the original Thai document, or a certified copy if accepted, plus a certified translation into the required language, often English.
MFA legalization
The Department of Consular Affairs checks official signatures and stamps the document and/or translation. This is the main Thai government legalization step.
Embassy authentication
When required, the destination country's embassy in Thailand adds its consular authentication after MFA legalization. Requirements vary by country and document type.
End result: your document has the Thai MFA legalization and, where required, the destination embassy authentication. The receiving authority still makes the final acceptance decision.

Avoid Common Legalization Mistakes
These are the issues we most often see when a file has already been rejected or delayed.
What goes wrong (DIY attempts)
- Wrong translation format. The MFA may reject a translation if the certification, layout, or stamp format is not acceptable.
- Name mismatches. Thai-to-English spelling that does not match the passport can create verification problems.
- Incomplete documents. Back-page stamps, registrar notes, or missing copies can delay an otherwise straightforward filing.
- Embassy surprises. Some embassies require appointments, specific payment methods, translations into certain languages, or extra copies.
How we prevent these issues
- MFA-ready translation format. We use translators familiar with legalization layouts, stamps, names, and official terminology.
- Document pre-check. We try to catch issues before submission, not after a rejected filing.
- Document set check. We check identity details, every page, visible stamps, signatures, and document order.
- Embassy coordination. We match the filing to each embassy's published protocol, appointment system, and document checklist.
Thailand Has Acceded; Entry Into Force Is 28 February 2027
The current legalization process remains relevant during the transition. After the effective date, confirm Thailand’s implementation, the competent authority and whether the destination country accepts the accession.

Apostille Thailand Alternative FAQ
- Can Thailand issue apostilles? +
Thailand deposited its accession on 30 June 2026, and the Convention is scheduled to take effect for Thailand on 28 February 2027. Until then, many overseas submissions continue to use MFA legalization and any destination-authority step. Recheck official implementation guidance after the effective date.
- What if my destination country normally accepts apostilles? +
Many countries that accept apostilles also have a process for documents from non-Convention countries such as Thailand. The usual path is MFA legalization followed by embassy authentication if that authority requires it.
- Can a Thai notary apostille a document? +
A notarial services attorney can notarize a document, but legalization is performed by the MFA. Apostilles are not issued in Thailand before 28 February 2027.
- How long does the complete process take? +
Normal: often 1–2 weeks total, depending on translation, MFA processing, embassy timing, and courier. Express: may be possible in urgent cases. We give a realistic timeline after reviewing your documents.
- Do I need to translate Thai documents? +
Usually, yes. The receiving country or embassy needs to understand the document. Thai-to-English is most common, but some embassies prefer their local language. We check before starting.
- Can you help if I'm outside Thailand? +
Many clients are outside Thailand. The usual flow is: (1) email or upload documents, (2) we prepare a power of attorney if needed, (3) you sign and return it, (4) we handle the Thailand steps, (5) courier delivers worldwide.
- What happens if documents get rejected? +
If an office requests a correction or additional document, we explain what is needed and help with translation corrections, supporting documents, or re-submission steps.
- Which languages does the MFA accept? +
Thai or English. We translate from other languages and certify before filing.
- Which countries accept this process? +
Most countries have a way to accept properly legalized documents from Thailand, but the exact steps vary. We regularly handle files for the USA, Canada, UK, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, and many others.
