Case Studies — Enterprise Translation Projects

A look at selected enterprise translation projects we have handled, from machine-learning datasets to hospitality campaigns, consulting documents, and technical training localization.

Case Study #1 · Enterprise & ML

Shopee — Machine Learning Data Translation

Engaged 2019 · 6,000,000 words · English ↔ Thai · 25 translators

Project scope

  • Volume: 6 million words total
  • Languages: English ↔ Thai (bidirectional)
  • Structure: 3 batches of 2,000,000 words each
  • Timeline: 6 months from kickoff to final delivery
  • Engaged: 2019 — follow-on projects since

Team & approach

  • 25 translators assigned to the project
  • 5 proofreaders for review across batches
  • 1 dedicated project coordinator for client communication
  • Workflow built for batch delivery and ML data consistency

The challenge: Shopee asked us in 2019 to support a large ML training data project: about 6,000,000 words across English-to-Thai and Thai-to-English work. The main pressure points were volume, speed, and keeping terminology consistent enough for training data use.

What we did: We put together a 25-translator team, supported by 5 proofreaders and one project coordinator. The work was split into three 2,000,000-word batches over six months, with shared glossaries and rolling QA used to keep output aligned across the team.

Outcome: The batches were delivered on schedule and gave Shopee the translated data needed for its ML training workflow. The project also led to further Shopee assignments after the initial engagement.

Case Study #2 · Hospitality & Marketing

Accor — Multilingual Hospitality Translation

Engaged 2021 · 8 languages · brochures, commercial documents, social marketing

Project scope

  • Engaged: Since 2021 — ongoing
  • Content types: Brochures, commercial documents, social marketing campaigns
  • Languages: Arabic, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Spanish, Thai
  • Industry: International hospitality

Team & approach

  • Native-speaker translators with hospitality-sector experience
  • Translator and editor review for each piece
  • Early clarification instead of guessing when source text is unclear
  • Requests for images and reference material where needed

The challenge: Hospitality copy often describes places, services, and guest experiences that are easy to misread without context. A small misunderstanding can change the tone of a brochure or give guests the wrong expectation in the target language.

What we did: We kept a close clarification loop with Accor. When a description was ambiguous, we asked for context, photographs, or location references before finalizing the target-language copy. That helped the translators make choices based on the actual property or service, not assumptions.

Outcome: The result was hospitality content across 8 languages that read naturally for local audiences and avoided avoidable rework caused by misunderstood source copy.

Case Study #3 · Consulting & Daily Operations

McKinsey & Co — Ongoing Business Translation Support

Engaged 2020 · regular delivery · slide decks, contracts, on-site interpretation

Project scope

  • Engaged: Since 2020 — regular urgent support
  • Content types: Slide decks, internal documents, contracts
  • Languages: Thai ↔ English (bidirectional, urgent)
  • Industry: Management consulting
  • Plus: On-site interpretation for factory visits and client events

Team & approach

  • Specialist translators with consulting/business document experience
  • Workflow built for urgent quoting and short delivery windows
  • Professional interpreters for online meetings and site visits
  • Strict NDAs on all material

The challenge: Since 2020, BTIS has supported McKinsey & Co. with Thai-English translation and interpretation. The work often involves short deadlines, confidential material, and documents such as presentation decks, internal notes, and contracts.

What we did: We built the workflow around fast response times and clear handover. Specialist Thai-English translators handle consulting and business documents, while interpreters are available for online meetings and on-site assignments such as factory visits, client conferences, and leadership sessions. NDAs and confidentiality controls are part of the standard process.

Outcome: The engagement has become a recurring source of translation and interpretation support for Thailand-related work, with additional document types added as needs arise.

Case Study #4 · Training & Localization

Safety Works™ — Technical Training Localization

UK-accredited HSSE training · UI strings + video subtitles · drone flying courses

Project scope

  • Client: Safety Works — UK-accredited training and supply company
  • Operations: Worldwide, with hubs in the UK and Thailand
  • Specialty: HSSE (Health, Safety, Security, Environment) consultancy and training
  • Project: Localization of drone flying training courses
  • Deliverables: User interface strings + subtitled training videos

Team & approach

  • Technical translators familiar with HSSE, aviation, and engineering terms
  • Multimedia workflow for subtitle timing and text fitting
  • Glossary control for new technical terms and acronyms
  • Client checks for new terms where standard translations were not established

The challenge: Safety Works provides UK-accredited HSSE training, e-learning, blended learning, and related technical services worldwide. They asked us to localize drone flying courses, including in-app UI text and training videos that required subtitles.

What we did: The content was technical and included newer terminology, acronyms, and abbreviations that were not always standardized in the target languages. We built a working glossary, checked uncertain terms with the client, and used the same terminology across both UI strings and subtitles so learners saw one clear version of each concept.

Outcome: The localized course materials brought the UI and subtitle content into one consistent learner experience for Safety Works' UK and Thailand operations.
