Thai Driving License FAQs
Can I driver in Thailand with an International Driver's Licence?
Yes, you can drive in Thailand with an international driver’s license, according to the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic, to which Thailand is a signatory. This agreement allows visitors to use valid international driving permits (IDPs) in conjunction with their national driving license for a temporary period, usually up to 6 months.
Possessing an international driver’s permit can streamline the process of securing a Thai license, as it eliminates the need for driving and knowledge tests.
What is required to obtain a Thai driver's licence in Thailand as a foreigner?
You should be 18 and fit to drive. Beyond that, you will need to provide documents to support your application.
Document requirements may vary over time, so it’s advisable to confirm the current requirements with the Department of Land Transport prior to initiating your Thai driving license application. Document requirements may vary over time, so it’s advisable to confirm the current requirements with the Department of Land Transport prior to initiating your Thai driving license application. But her is what you will most likely need to do:
- Gather all essential documents, including a valid passport, visa, TM6 departure card, a letter address from immigration or work permit, health certificate, and proof of good vision.
- Proceed to the nearest Department of Land Transport office, open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. during weekdays.
- Complete and submit your application form with your required documents at the Department of Land Transport office. The application can be filled out either in Thai or English.
- Undertake the written and practical driving tests. The former evaluates your knowledge of Thai traffic rules, regulations, and road signs, while the latter tests your hands-on driving skills.Â
- Please note that individuals with valid international licenses are exempted from these tests.
- After successfully passing the tests, settle the necessary fees. A temporary license (2 years validity) costs 200 baht. After maintaining a clean driving record for 2 years, you can upgrade to a personal license (5 years validity) at a cost of 500 baht.
- Finally, collect your Thai driver’s license, which will feature your photograph, personal information, and the categories of vehicles you’re authorized to operate.
